EUROVISION 2018: THE ROUND UP OF NATIONAL FINAL NEWS AND GOSSIP

The national final season is heating up and the signs are good: several countries relaunch national final after years of internal choices, some press the national language use and again some countries break their number of submission records. And then we have some that go the crazy way.....

Albania will host its annual 3-day affair just before Christmas and as usual, the winner will get the ticket to Lisbon - after a major revamp most likely.... Let's see if they provide the first entry of the season or will some other country reveale their cards before?

Armenia goes for Depi Evratesil again. However there are major changes: Only four shows and the artists must come with their entries already so goodbye karaoke and then shopping for a song? And you must be Armenian citizen or of Armenian heraitage. National pride has its time and place. And that's Eurovision if anything. Take note some other unnamed countries....

Belgium is the only known artist so far: Laura Groeseneken, revealed already late September

Cyprus has a composer. Read more here

Czech Republic has already received over 130 submissions, when the window is stilL open for another two weeks. The interest seems to be quite high among Czech artists.

Estonia received a record number of entries, 258. 15 songs will be chosen by a jury and another 5 by Eesti laul organizers to add some spice and variety if needed.  Update: The semifinalists are here

Finland: YLE will held a press conference next Tuesday, November 7. Information on UMK2018 will be revealed, and who knows maybe even the competing artists? Update: YLE shocked everyone changing the rules and skipping UMK altogerher and chose Saara Aalto instead. The UMK is now only 3 songs affair all sung by her.

France also returns to the national final format. The songs must have at least 70% French lyrics and no English will be added should a 100% French song win. French and international juries with televoters will determinate the winner. Garou will be hosting the shows; rumored to be two semifinals before the grand final. I would just send Garou. Period.

Germany is making another desperate move: So called Europe Panel made of 100 people around Europe will select the five finalists. They also will vote in the final along with televoters and international jury. Can this combi lift Germany from the bottom 2?

Greece is working closely with record labels and therefor there seem to be only 16 artists aiming for Lisbon. 8-member jury is valuating the proposals as we speak, but ERT is keeping its right to cancel it all and go for another way if not pleased with the offering. Or so it seems.
The artists rumored to have submitted an entry are: Cholesterols, Yiannis Dimitras, Duo Fina, Areti Ketime, Dimitris Kiklis, Giannis Moraitis, Vangelis Panatos, Christina Saltis, Vasiliki Stephanou, Stereo Soul feat. DJ Concent, Sunday Derembe feat. Lava, Gianna Terzi, Panagiotis Tsakalakos, Tony Vlach,

Israel's The Next Star 2018 is already in full swing. In the first three episodes Netta Barzilal, Jonathan Mergui, Jaki Gaforov, Adva Omer, Mor Karbasi, Chen Aharoni, Gal Yaakoni, Hagar Yefet, Rinar Bar, Tslil Goldman, Riki Ben Ari, Jose Steinberg, Eden Meiri and Shir Baruch have survived and the journey to Lisbon continues.

Latvia had the crazy idea of putting all the 63 songs on internet and people got to give them thumbs up or down. 72% of the thumbs went down. Artists were kept secret. Now about 20 songs will be selected for Supernova semifinals.

Malta has it's finalists out already. Here

Montenegro relaunches Montevizija. Last time it was used in 2006. Anybody all over the world is welcome to take part but the song must be in national languages :-) Five entries will be in the final with 100% televote.

Netherlands will select once again internally and the rumour mill is in full swing; by media or by wannabes themselves. Shirma Rouse, Dotan, DJ Martin Garrix, Jacqueline Govaert, Chef'Special, Maan, Romy Monteiro, Sharon Doorson and ever present Within Temptation. Let's wait and see....

Norway received around 1200 songs for their one off grand final on March 10, colliding with Melodifestivalen. Nice!

Portugal's Diogo Picarra says he might sing his own entry in the competition. I say: Ai sim! The other composers are here

Romania is going all crazy with their selection. A Melodifestivalen kind of tour around the country is planned. The submissions start soon and close December 15. Live auditions follow before Christmas.  MIHAI has reported to have submitted already seven songs.....

San Marino goes wild on internet. Over 250 entries from 60 countries were received already and the submission period is still open. OGAE Members get to vote for one of the three wildcards. The usual jokes are taking part as always, but also Eurovision veterans from Iceland and Croatia have sent their application with many national finalists from all over Europe. If you spot them among the hopeless nobodies. I'll get to this process when it makes some sense in later stages....

Serbia is also a country that relaunches the national final, Beovizija. The plans are though wide in the open as they don't know yet if there will be one or two shows and where, and guess what? They hold the right to skip it all and just pick up someone internally if the submissions aren't to their liking....And yes, the song must be in national languages and the singer(s) Serbian. Hooray!

Slovenia also hinted earlier the entry should be in Slovenian or other minority languages but that rule seem to have disappeared from the final rules. However, submission period is on but yet there are no news if national final will be staged or if there will be internal selection instead....

Sweden received 2771 entries through open call and from record labels. No changes in the process of selecting the entry when Melodifestivalen travels throughout country to Stockholm, where David Lindgren hosts the show again, this time alone.

Switzerland received a record number of entries, 670. 16 of them were written in a special Euovision songwriting camp.... At least Swiss are trying to get it right this time. Maybe. That might just result as "nice" anonymous Eurovision pop. Something that no one hates but no one likes enought to vote it to the final either. Like most Swiss entries lately.

Ukraine does again the same national final format they used last year. The submission period is open until mid January and the procuders are wishng songs with modern arrangements but folk instruments. Another nod to lat year's winner and thumbs down to Swedish bubblegum pop? Hooray!

After the jump a couple of rumored Eurovision artists/wannabes:

ESC 2016 WISH LIST: MARGARET FOR POLAND

Małgorzata Jamroży aka Margaret has also been tipped for Eurovision and apparently she did turn it down but she'd be perfect. She's got a look and persona you can't unnotice nor forget, she's got hit songs, she has been voted or nominated for everything from Trendy artist to the Hope of the Year, Fashion Icon and Glamour Woman of the year besides the usual best video, song, album, debut..... Oh she's also a fashion designer! She's very clever with social medias and would surely use it to her advantage if selected for Stockholm 2016. Her debut album is titled Add the blonde , do we need to say more? Except it includes mostly Swedish written pop tunes like Tell me how are ya , Wasted , Start a fire and Heartbeat . And of course her debut single and internationally noticed Thank you very much that you can enjoy below with all its anti-textil feel. I think she's Eurovision perfection, she's cheeky and fun, can we have her?

SONGS OF THE YEAR 2015: #5 KRISTA SIEGFRIDS - ON & OFF

Krista Siegfrids is delivering nice pop tunes one after another and this one is particularly catchy and soon you will be singing along..... Hopefully her Melodifestivalen entry will be equally good!

ESC 2013: SERBIA'S BIG GUNS

Serbia is one of the most succesful Eurovision countries in the recent years and this blogger 's favorites. This year I am again very curiously waiting for their entry and what they will offer us when they have a national final once again after last year's internal selection. Many bigger and smaller names have been rumored to have sent a song, or have confirmed so themselves. Among then a 63-year-old disco diva Neda Ukraden , Eurovision veteran Vukašin Brajić 's OT Band, Danijel Pavlovic who is Marija Serifovic's step-brother, national final veteran Ana Nikolic and other names like Nenad Cvijetic , Dejan Petrovic, Zejna , Ivana Pavkovic , Vanja Mijatovic .... Let's see who really are in when the final 15 out of 80 will be announced for the March 2, 2013 final. These 15 will be cut to five for the superfinal by televoting. Then we have Bojan Bjelic , who apparently was sending his song Mora before he decided not to blaming the contest is fixed and Serbian

Et voilà! Anggun presents Echo (You and I)

So today we finally heard the French entry in Eurovision 2012 in Baku by Anggun. Echo (You and I ) is rather bizarre mix of many things and just when you think you get it the songs takes a turn to another direction. Whistling all along. Very catchy it is. Call it an earworm if you want. Still I wouldn't scream a winning entry but... we will see. In Patricia Kaas like ending me thinks.

ESC 2016 BELARUS: NAKED WITH WOLVES?

Today's funniest Eurovision related story comes from Belarus. Some sources claim Ivan wants to perform on stage naked and with live wolf or wolves. It surely would be a first on Eurovision stage! We have seen some forgotten underwear over the years, and some cardbox animals though..... Is it time to take things a bit further?  No, according the rules live animals are not allowed, and Eurovision being a family show nudity won't do either. (It seems to be ok to be half naked if you are a dancer though..... )

GOODBYE, FAREWELL...

The time has come. After all these years, 5,7 million visits, 12.000 articles I guess the time has come. As much as I love and care for Eurovision it just doesn't feel the same. The Corona years took their toll and the past two years and certain decisions have helped me to mature the idea that next year I will hear the songs for the first time in semi-final just like any so called local.  The bubble has burst. Add the toxicity in social medias and fandom. The arrogant teenagers who saw their first contest somewhere 2017 or even 2021 who think they know it all and only their opinion matters. Did I mention the toxic atmosphere on social medias? I'm too old for that sh*t. It's been a long ride that took me to various Eurovision on spot as a fan and tourist,  as a journalist, as a delegation member. I met some great people, made memories of lifetime. In stressful, sad periods of my life this blog has been my safe place, a place to escape and forget everything else for an hour o

Summer songs: Samantha Fox & Sabrina - Call me

Summertime is the time for cover versions and remixes. The late 1980's war of the boombs is over when Samantha and Sabrina put their bras together and cover Blondie's Call me in peace and harmony. Amore, chiamami!

GREECE: HELENA PAPARIZOU HITS AGAIN WITH HAIDE

Eurovision song contest 2005 winner Helena Paparizou has been enjoying Top-5 hits every year since 2003 with the exception of 2010 and 2014, this latest one being already her 27th! And Haide is charting also in Bulgaria and Finland, of all places. The catchiness of her hits has changed less over the years than her face....  Here's the English version , below the Greek version.

Blogilkar Exclusive: RAMBO AMADEUS INTERVIEW

My flying reporter Robert met Rambo Amadeus in his hotel this morning and what an interesting and entertaining meet it was! Unfortunately the time wasn't enough as this man has lots to tell about many topics. However, here are the main things! Thank you Rambo for this interview and first of all, how an earth Montenegro wanted you to represent them in Eurovision? I don't know! I really don't know. I didn't want to ask any questions why they wanted me. So they came to you, you didn't go to them? Of course. Everybody comes to me..... And everybody knows you and that you are bit, maybe a lot, Eurovision skeptic. Why did they come to you then? Well, I think they want the audience to pay attention to them? I think the new, young and ambitious director of RTCG decided to do some kind of shock therapy. He probably thinks there's nothing to lose. I asked him "Are you sure? Do you know my work?" and he said yes. I think they are learning how to g

REMEMBERING MARILYN MONROE

It's 50 years since Marilyn Monroe passed away on August 5, 1962. Her legend still lives on and there's no doubt she got "it". Probably very much misunderstood and surely underrated she remains one of the biggest stars on this planet ever. How many fans have really seen her movies, I mean all of them? Not only the 2-3 most successful ones where she played pretty much the same dumb blond? Thee's so much more to her if you watch all her work.... And had she lived. She would be 86 now.  Like this .
